Digest: Vintage Soviet Lenses on Modern Cameras

From Helios to Mir

This is a set of lenses I have reviewed before. All of them are in my collection and all I happily use on my Canon 5D Mark II. Love them! Also, I recommend you to check my Youtube channel where you find videos about vintage lenses.

Industar 50-2

It’s a good vintage lens. The only thing is that it is F/3/5. So, Helios is faster.

Helios 44m

Personally, I really like it for video. And I photograph still lifes with it. This does not mean that it is bad at portraits.

I’m just used to do it that way.

Helios 44m-6

This Helios has become my go-to lens for portraits. It produces incredibly beautiful swirling bokeh. Among other things, this lens is the next step in the evolution of the Helios 44m. But for me, they are different.

I think this is a must have. If you are into vintage.

If not, I don’t know why you need it.

Mir-3

I have the “zebra” version. It is a very interesting lens. Both from a historical point of view and as a lens works.

The only thing that can confuse a buyer is that it is difficult to find an adapter for this lens. Or rather, it is difficult to find it at the “price”. And yes, in general it is a wide-angle lens, but on modern DSLRs it does not behave like a wide-angle.

A very interesting and quite rare thing.

Soviet lenses

I am a fan of vintage lenses.

But I don’t think that this is something that everyone needs. For beginners – definitely not. This is all for people who are fans of customization, atmosphere and manual mode.

For a beginner amateur photographer, in my opinion, it is better to take modern autofocus lenses. To suffer with focusing and color correction is a strange choice for beginners.

If you are already bored, looking for a new look, something fresh, want to experiment – then welcome to the vintage club, but if you just recently bought a camera and looking for a good lens – vintage lenses are not your frends

I can not say that I am a fan of Alien Worlds. But without any doubt, I declare I really like stories by Ridley Scott: from Blade Runner to Raised by Wolves.
