MIR-3 lens review and history: Tragedy & Greatness

MIR-3 is really amazing. Mir in Russian means World or Piece. And both words reflect what that lens actually is about. Today I tell you about a fantastic lens. The lens hiding human history of the 20th century and our nature. The Tradegy and the Greatness.

This video is not like other my lens reviews. Actually I could make pleasent and cozy video. But in that case, it would not be my real opinion if I did not tell you the bittersweet truth.

Yes, Mir-3 is an amazing lens. But I have things to say.

About Lens MIR-3

Mir-3 is a vintage Soviet lens. The Weight of a Mir -3 is about 500 grams, it is not small. But I would not say it is a large one too. And actually it was created for medium format cameras. The lens had been producing in USSR by the Arsenal Plant from 1957 till 1984 in Kiev.
The Mir-3 has a mount similar to the Hasselblad M60x6 (by) screw mount. The lens is wide angle, though on my Canon 5d Mark II it works like normal. It has aperture from f 3.5 to f 22 and of course it is a manual and fixed focal length lens.

All Mir family lenses are interesting and good. The optic scheme of Mir-1 was created under the guidance of David Volosov in GOI in 1957. And yes, it was designed on base on Zeiss Flektogon 2,8/37 by Harry Zöllner. But Mir is not a copy. GOI actually made Mir-1 better than the original one. And so successfully, that they were awarded the Grand Prix by Expo-58 in Brussels.

Arsenal produced cameras and lenses for space programs too. Special versions of Mir-3, medium format camera Kiev-c and “Salut”, have been used on Zond 6 and 7, which were unpiloted Moon-flyby spacecrafts. Curiously enough, Yiry Gagarin, who was the first person to journey into outer space, had Salut. By the way, the camera Salut is an improved version of the Hasselblad 1600F.
